Skulptur Projekte Münster 2017

Since 1977, every 10 years a fantastic 100-day artistic event is taking place in the city of Münster, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. This year it is already the 5th edition of Skulptur Projekte Münster 2017.

The Begining

In the 1970s there was a public outcry againts placement of the art work in Münster. George Rickey, was an American kinetic sculptor, who placed kinetic sculpture, ”Drei rotierende Quadrate” in the city. Then in 1977, Klaus Bussmann, the director of the Westfälisches Landesmusem in Münster gave a series of lectures and presentation in order to make the people realize and understand what art in public places was. And that was the beginning of the idea of Skulptur Projekte in Münster. Bussmann and Kasper König, a curator at Museum Ludwig are considered to be its founders. After some protests of the projects, the citizens of Münster were finally ready to accept it and today are proud of it. They are celebrating its presence and understand the economical benefit Skulptur Projekte brings to their city of bicycles.

In 1997 more than 500,000 visitors came to Münster to see the work of artists from 25 countries.

How does it work?

The artists choose a site in the city and imagine their installations in that particular site. The committee of the Skulptur Projekte highlights the best sculpture artworks from a selections of artists from all around the world. Since 1997 Skulptur Projekte takes place together with Documenta exhibition organised in Kassel - 200 km away from Münster.

Skulptur Projekte 2017

"(...) for the 2017 Skulptur Projekte we are as convinces as ever that art in the urban realm is capable of activating historical, architectural, social, political and aesthetic contexts. We see its greater potential not in the occupation, but rather in the creation, of spaces" (https://www.skulptur-projekte.de/#/En/Information). 2017 is the year of new 35 artistic installations which are available to see from June, 10 till October, 01. Free admission.

39 works from previous Skulpture Projekte were bought by the city and remain in Münster. They not only remind about the previous editions and artists but also are a great possibility to walk through history of specific sculptures, monuments and public art.

Skulptur Projekte is a cooperative project of Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) and the city of Münster. The exhibition is being organized by the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur.
